Aerospace, Woven Structural Shapes & Advanced Composite Structures

To meet the demands of high performance materials for use in advanced and aerospace composites, Bally Ribbon Mills has developed a multi-dimensional, 3-D, continuous weaving method that produces multi-layer textiles that can be fabricated into net shaped structures.

For the design engineer involved in aerospace applications such as aircraft, satellites and missiles, this advanced 3-D weaving method offers new approaches to weight and cost problem solving that are not readily available. Perhaps the foremost advantage of Bally Ribbon Mills’ multi-dimensional weaving method is the ability to weave complex shapes automatically. Thus, a composite part of a structure that would otherwise require a number of smaller fasteners can be woven with 3-D features at significantly reduced manufacturing costs.

Bally Ribbon Mills’ Advanced Product Group designs and produces woven structural shapes for hybrid composite structures used in aerospace applications, bridge structures, sporting gear, and medical equipment. The lightweight, totally integrated design of Bally's unique woven structures affords higher levels of strength and opportunities for new design applications previously unattainable with build-up or weld-reinforcement areas.

Emerging Trends
Emerging trends have created unique applications and the demand for continual advancements in weaving technology to satisfy the aerospace, defense, medical, industrial, and commercial trades.

Given these developing trends, Bally's Advanced Products Group has devoted their efforts and experience to the design and manufacture of complex shapes using "difficult to weave" fibers while minimizing yarn damage and controlling costs.

Product Design and Engineering
The Advanced Product Group is a team of skilled engineers, technicians and manufacturing personnel dedicated to the development of solutions to your challenging woven material needs. We offer over 70 years of first-hand experience in weaving including:

  • 2-D woven shapes
  • 3-D angle interlock multi-layer woven material and complex shapes
  • Uni-directional woven narrow fabrics
  • Tubular webbing and woven materials
  • Hybrids
  • Braids
  • Spiral weaves/polar weaves

The Advanced Product Group markets a wide selection of woven materials that can be combined with virtually any available resin system. These products are suitable for a variety of prepreg, wet lay-up, and resin transfer operations. They also can be supplied as a dry preform or greige fabric, in "B" stage prepreg, or as an RTM finished part.

The research and development group at Bally Ribbon Mills specializes in the creation of unique textile forms for use in composites. Our R&D weaving areas are specially designed to offer close surveillance and confidentiality.

Bally Ribbon Mills’ advanced products are constructed from a wide variety of reinforcing fibers and textile forms. Carbon/Graphite, Nicalon®, quartz, Kevlar®, glass, metal, hybrids and other fibers can be utilized in the construction of our 2-D and 3-D woven performs.

Feasibility Assessment
Feasibility assessment includes the determination of the weavability of various complex shapes, the weavability of various yarn types and an economic analysis of the production of various preforms.

Preform Design & Development
Given the customer’s product constraints – desired mechanical properties, cost of product, operating temperature and operating environment – Bally Ribbon Mills is capable of handling every stage of preform development from the initial design to prototype development to final product design and fabrication.
